ON THE SETTING UP THE PRESS AT KINGSTON, IN THE STATE OF
NEW-YORK.
To raise the soul above each base desire,
To warm the patriot with coelestial fire,
To blast a despot, while our senates rise,
And make mankind the social virtues prize:
For this the muse was giv'n, for this design'd,
From Heav'n descended, tho' by men refin'd.
And while fine actors woo spectators round,
And the soft speakers charm us with their sound,
. . . [12 lines]
To chear the land with her melodious lays;
Give virtuous men, and to the fair their praise.
And as we learn, that * at the muses call,
Stones danc'd on stones to form the Theban wall;
. . . [8 more lines] *Fable of Amphyon. [Signed:] A
Traveller.
